After arriving at the hospital there will be some paperwork that must be completed including admission forms.
You will meet your anaesthetist who will discuss the details of your general anaesthetic and your options for pain relief following your operation.
Dr Broadhurst will see you to answer any final questions before the breast surgery. He will then draw markings on your chest where the incisions will be located.
After completing the pre-operative formalities you will be taken to the operating theatre.
Breast reduction surgery is performed under general anaesthetic usually as a Day Surgery procedure. The operation takes approximately two hours during which excess breast tissue and overlying skin is removed. The remaining breast tissue is elevated and reshaped and this involves repositioning the remaining breast tissue (with the nipple still attached) to a more appropriate position.

All incisions will be closed with internal dissolving stitches and dressings applied. A surgical bra will be fitted and the anaesthetist will then wake you. After your operation you will be taken to the recovery room where you will be closely observed by our experienced nursing staff who will take care of you until you are awake and ensure you are comfortable.
You will be allowed to go home once you have fully recovered from your general anaesthetic which is usually three hours from the completion of your operation. After your operation it is very important that you remain in the care of a responsible adult who will stay with you overnight.
Your anaesthetist will prescribe pain killers for you to take in the days following your breast surgery. There will be mild to moderate discomfort following your operation and it is advisable that you take it easy for the first week following your operation. An appointment will be made for you to see Dr Broadhurst one week after your operation.
It is important to rest and take it easy for the first few days after your operation. When you are more comfortable you can begin to increase your level of activity and by the end of the first week should be able to move freely, shower and look after yourself around the house.
The timing of returning to work will vary on how physical your work is. For sedentary or desk type work you could return to work as early as one week after your operation but it is generally better to take two weeks off. For more physical occupations you made need slightly longer
