Male Rhinoplasty Brisbane

Request a Consultation

Male rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to alter the shape, size, or structure of a man’s nose, addressing both aesthetic and functional concerns. Suitable candidates for male rhinoplasty include men who want to change the appearance of their noses, have sustained nasal injuries, or experience breathing difficulties due to structural issues.

Outcomes of Male Rhinoplasty?

Male rhinoplasty addresses unique characteristics often found in male noses, such as a wider and higher nasal bridge. Common goals for male rhinoplasty include reducing the prominence of the nasal bridge, changing the nasal tip, and correcting asymmetries. However, the procedure is highly individualised. The surgeon will use specific techniques tailored to your concerns and goals.

The procedure can:

  • Reduce the size and prominence of a wide or high nasal bridge
  • Change the shape of the nasal tip
  • Correct nasal asymmetries resulting from injuries or congenital issues
  • Adjust the nose’s size and shape
  • Address functional issues, such as breathing difficulties caused by a deviated septum or other structural problems.

Consultation

Your Initial Consultation

Before undergoing a male rhinoplasty, you will need to have an initial appointment to determine the factors that can affect the outcome of the procedure. Every procedure is different, which means the surgery will be specially tailored for you. You will need to discuss your medical history and any current medications you are taking. Additionally, you should express your concerns and reasons for wanting surgery, as well as your expected outcomes. This will help us develop a treatment plan that is suited to your needs and goals. During this meeting, Dr Broadhurst will explain the process of surgery and what to expect afterwards. You should then have a good understanding of what the process entails.

Your Second Consultation

Your second meeting will occur a few weeks before male rhinoplasty. This will be at one of our Brisbane, Sunshine Coast, Hervey Bay, or Bundaberg locations. The purpose of this is to ensure you are prepared for surgery, confirm the details, and discuss the likely outcomes. It will also give you the chance to ask any further questions.

Dr Broadhurst will examine your nose to determine the exact areas to target. You will discuss the surgery to confirm any last details and ensure you have a full understanding of the process. After this meeting, you should have a clear idea of what to expect before and during surgery, as well as the aftercare and healing process. Dr Broadhurst welcomes any questions you may have about the surgery.

Procedure

What to expect during the procedure?

The surgery is performed under a general anaesthetic. We recommend that patients have someone there, usually a friend or family member, to make sure they get home safely.

During male rhinoplasty surgery, the surgeon will shape the nose by modifying the bones and cartilage. He will remove or add cartilage according to what was discussed during your consultation. Reduction rhinoplasty is when tissue is removed from the nose. Augmentation, on the other hand, adds volume to a certain area. For example, if the tip of your nose requires rebuilding, the surgeon may take a cartilage graft from a different area of the body. This is usually the rib or ear. Surgeons can use one of two methods when performing this surgery:

Male Open Rhinoplasty

Open Rhinoplasty 01, BPS

Male open rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that involves making a small incision across the columella, the strip of skin between the nostrils, to provide the surgeon with greater visibility and access to the underlying nasal structures. This approach allows for precise modifications to the bone and cartilage, making it particularly suitable for addressing complex issues such as significant reshaping or structural corrections. The procedure is tailored to change the nose’s appearance and function while maintaining a masculine aesthetic that harmonises with the patient’s overall facial features.

Male Closed Rhinoplasty

Closed Rhinoplasty 01, BPS

Male closed rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure to alter the shape, size, or structure of a man’s nose using incisions made entirely inside the nostrils. This approach leaves no visible external scars and allows the surgeon to make necessary adjustments to the bone and cartilage. It is typically used for less complex changes and can address issues such as a prominent nasal bridge and minor asymmetries while maintaining a masculine appearance.

How much does a male rhinoplasty cost in Brisbane?

Male rhinoplasty is performed for many different reasons. Each male patient has different concerns and goals for the outcomes of surgery. As a result, costs can vary depending on the methods required and the extent of the changes to the patient’s nose. When considering costs, we need to consider many factors, such as surgeon and anaesthetist fees. The hospital stay, medication, and aftercare costs can also affect the final price. You should keep in mind that the more extensive the procedure is, the longer the surgery will take. For example, if you need a cartilage graft from a different part of the body, this may extend the duration and impact the final cost. We can outline the cost of the surgery after we have discussed these factors.

A common question from patients is whether Medicare will cover part of the cost of their nose surgery. If you need the surgery due to a medical issue, Medicare may cover a portion of the total fee. We can answer any further questions you may have about costs during a private discussion.

Recovery

Recovery After Male Rhinoplasty

After male rhinoplasty, Dr Andrew Broadhurst will apply a splint to stabilise the nose. Patients should have someone there to drive them home.

The first few days after the procedure can be challenging for patients, as they often experience swelling and bruising. It’s normal to feel congested and to have some light bleeding. We can provide oral pain medication to help manage any discomfort. During this time, it’s important to avoid heavy lifting or any activities that strain your body. Dr Broadhurst will provide personalised at-home care instructions to support your recovery.
You may receive specific guidance such as:

  • Avoid exercise and heavy lifting for a few weeks.
  • Sleep on your back and keep your head elevated at night.
  • Do not have hot baths or showers for the first week.
  • Avoid activities that could injure the nose, especially in the first two weeks.
  • Avoid smoking, as this can impact the healing process.
  • Abstain from drinking alcohol during recovery.
  • Drink lots of water and maintain a healthy diet.
  • Take prescribed oral pain medication.

Most patients take at least one week off work following their surgery, but some choose to take a longer rest period. You can resume rigorous activities after about six weeks. Bruising around the nose and eyes will resolve over time, and most swelling will subside within two weeks. However, the nose is a very sensitive area, and it may take up to six months to a year to see the full results of male rhinoplasty.

Procedure Risks & Complications

Male rhinoplasty surgery comes with risks and complications, such as:

Severe side effects are rare but can include:

  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Allergic reaction to anaesthesia
  • New asymmetry of the nose
  • Persistent asymmetry
  • Reduced nasal tip sensation
  • Post-op airway limitation
  • Impaired or lost sense of smell
  • Lip numbness

Although these complications are uncommon, they can occur. If you experience a severe side effect after surgery, you should seek medical care. To reduce your risk, it is important to take adequate rest and follow your at-home care instructions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is different about male rhinoplasty?

The goals of male and female rhinoplasty procedures are different, although the surgeries themselves are similar. Male rhinoplasty involves straightening or lowering the nasal bridge and widening the middle of the nose, while female rhinoplasty involves reducing the width or correcting the angle of the nose tip.

Who are the suitable candidates?

Suitable candidates for male rhinoplasty are men who are in good health and want to address issues with the shape, size, or function of their noses. They are also generally non-smokers, do not have bleeding conditions, and have realistic expectations about what rhinoplasty surgery can achieve.

What is involved?

Male rhinoplasty involves various techniques tailored to the individual’s specific nasal condition. For those undergoing surgery to reduce the size of the nose, the procedure may involve the removal or reshaping of bone and cartilage. Conversely, if the goal is to increase the size or change the structure of the nose, the surgeon may use cartilage grafts, often harvested from the septum, ear, or rib, to add volume.

How long is the recovery time?

Exact recovery times can vary from patient to patient. Generally, you will need to take at least one week off work to allow your body to rest and recover. Most of the bruising should subside within two weeks, and you will be able to resume light activities. Patients should avoid strenuous activities during the healing process.

When will I see the results?

Although the results may be visible after a few weeks, the nose can take a long time to fully heal. This means it can take up to a year to see the full results. Regular follow-up appointments with the surgeon will help monitor progress and address any concerns during the recovery period.
