While male rhinoplasty surgeries can create a more visually ideal nose shape, they can also address breathing issues as well as disfigurement from past trauma. If you are concerned about unevenness, a nose hump, a deviated septum, or other issues, you may be a good candidate for this surgery. Brisbane plastic surgeon, Dr Andrew Broadhurst, will assess your nose and develop a personalised plan in line with your goals. Surgery will then address deformities and create a more visually appealing nose shape. Once the area heals, patients often report a boost in confidence from their post-surgery results.
What are the benefits of male rhinoplasty?
The nose is often seen as the central ornament of the face. Male noses often have certain characteristics that differ from female noses. For example, they are often more structural, with a wider and higher nasal bridge. This means many male rhinoplasty surgeries involve making the bridge of the nose smaller and lower so as to be less prominent. However, if your nose is small and thin, this can also be a cause for your concern, and you may wish to make the nose larger and more structured. Your surgeon will employ techniques in order to address the specific issues you are concerned about. The procedure can:
- Improve overall symmetry
- Achieve a more even nasal tip
- Lower and soften the nasal bridge
- Reduce the bridge hump
- Reduce the size of the nostrils
- Improve the angle of the nose
- Correct a deviated septum (wall between the nostrils)
- Address breathing problems and improve nasal airflow
Good candidates are usually men who are non-smokers and are seeking to fix a visual or functional concern regarding the nose. By addressing your personal concerns, your male rhinoplasty can help give you a boost of confidence in your outward image. It can therefore have a positive effect on your self-esteem and overall mental health.

Consultation
Your Initial Consultation
Before your male rhinoplasty, you will need to have an initial appointment to determine if you are a good candidate. This will be a virtual meeting with Dr Broadhurst, either over the phone or via FaceTime. Every procedure is different, which means this your surgery will be specially tailored to achieve the best results for you. You will need to discuss your medical history and any current medications you are taking. Additionally, you should express your concerns and reasons for wanting surgery, as well as your ideal outcomes. This will help us develop a treatment plan that is suited to your needs and goals. During this meeting, your surgeon will explain the process of surgery and what to expect afterwards. You should then have a good understanding of what the process entails.
Your Second Consultation
Your second meeting will take place in person a few weeks before your male rhinoplasty. This will be at one of our Brisbane, Sunshine Coast, Hervey Bay, Bundaberg, or Ballina locations. The purpose of this is to ensure you are prepared for surgery, confirm the details, and discuss the likely outcomes. It will also give you the chance to ask any further questions.
Dr Broadhurst will examine your nose to determine the exact areas to target. You will discuss the surgery in detail in order to confirm any last details and ensure you have a full understanding of the process. After this meeting, you should have a clear idea of what to expect before and during surgery, as well as the aftercare and healing process. Dr Broadhurst welcomes any questions you may have about your surgery. With years of experience, he will be able to provide you with quality advice and information so that you can approach surgery fully informed.
Procedure
What to expect during your procedure?
The surgery is performed in one day under a general anaesthetic. In some cases, if the nose surgery is less complex, your surgeon may opt for a local anaesthetic. You may need to stay in the hospital overnight, depending on how your body responds to the surgery. We recommend that patients have someone there, usually a friend or family member, to make sure they get home safely.
During your male rhinoplasty surgery, the surgeon will shape the nose by modifying the bones and cartilage. He will remove or add cartilage according to what was discussed during your consultation. Reduction rhinoplasty is when tissue is removed from the nose to the area smaller or more refined. Augmentation, on the other hand, adds volume to a certain area to achieve the desired size and shape. For example, if the tip of your nose requires rebuilding, your surgeon may take a cartilage graft from a different area of the body. This is usually the rib or ear. Surgeons can use one of two methods when performing this surgery:
Male Open Rhinoplasty
Closed rhinoplasty is often the favoured approach because the incision method does not leave scars on the outside. The surgeon makes small incisions on the inside of the nose. Patients who have closed surgery often have less swelling and a quicker recovery time.
Male Closed Rhinoplasty
Open rhinoplasty is usually the advised method for more complex cases. The surgeon makes an incision at the bottom of the nose between the nostrils (the columella). This allows the surgeon more access to the underlying structures of the nose, which facilitates more precision. The benefit of this method is that the skin can be lifted for better access to the entire nose structure. However, patients who undergo open surgery may be left with a small scar.
